Propose a specific new date you can actually hit
Name one date and back it with your real remaining capacity, not optimism. The common mistake is offering a date that is still too tight, so you have the same conversation next week. Before you fill in that date, check what you can actually finish this week. A date backed by real capacity holds. A hopeful one comes back to bite you.
Offer something in return
Give the client a reason to say yes: a partial delivery, a clear status, or a slightly reduced scope. Asking for more time while offering nothing reads as taking. Offering a smaller piece on the original date, or a firm status update, reads as a plan. Noor's homepage mock on day one does exactly this. Meridian still gets something on the date they expected.
One honest limitation. Renegotiating early does not create more hours. It moves the date to one you can hit, but the work still has to fit somewhere, and if your week is genuinely overbooked, something still gives. The deeper fix is not asking better. It is catching the overload before you accept it, which is the whole point of learning to stop overcommitting as a freelancer and getting honest about capacity planning for freelancers.
And some clients will be unhappy no matter how well you ask. Asking in time and offering a clear alternative improves the odds and protects the relationship. It is not a guarantee.
